Underconnected: The Relationship Gap We Don’t Talk About
It’s easy to go through life around people without ever really feeling connected to them. We stay busy, we stay productive, and we stay surrounded… but something still feels like it’s missing. You have people around you. You’re not completely alone. But you still feel like you’re carrying more than your share, or like you don’t have the kind of support you really need.
It’s not quite loneliness. It’s not isolation. It’s something else. It’s being underconnected.
That might not be a word you’ve ever heard, but it names something real. Being underconnected is that sense of disconnection beneath the surface, when your relationships exist, but don’t quite support you. When you’re the one checking in, holding things together, making the plans… and wondering why it still feels like too much.
You might have a group text. You might wave to people at the gym or show up at meetings with a smile. You might have lunch dates or work friends or people you’ve known since childhood. And still, you don’t quite feel like you belong. Or like you can really lean on anyone.
That’s underconnection. And it’s more common than we think.
Connection isn’t just about having people around; it’s about how deeply those relationships nourish you, challenge you, show up for you, and create space for you to do the same. That’s what makes up your social capital, the web of trust and mutual support that makes life feel less heavy, more possible, and more full.
Not everyone is lonely. But everyone can benefit from cultivating connection and community. Not just for comfort but because it’s a form of capital. Social capital is a kind of wealth. It’s not loud or flashy, but it can change everything. It opens doors, softens hard times, creates opportunities, and reminds you that you’re not doing this alone. And just like financial capital, it grows through small, steady investments. That investment doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it’s simply being intentional, paying attention, reaching out, or learning how to receive. It builds resilience, opportunity, and momentum. But if we don’t know that’s something we can and should build, we end up trying to function without it.
The problem is that most of us were never taught to see connection that way, as a proactive, preventive asset we can build with intention. So instead, we treat it like something that should “just happen,” and when it doesn’t, we simply assume the issue is us.
But the cost of that underconnection is real.
We overfunction. We stay too long in one-sided relationships. We keep people at arm’s length because we’re afraid of being too much or not enough. We try to meet every need except our own and wonder why we feel drained. We say yes when we’re tired. We try to be everyone’s support system while never really having one ourselves. We downplay what we need, avoid asking for help, and convince ourselves that “this is just how it is.”
If any of that sounds familiar, I want you to know there’s nothing wrong with you. You’re not bad at people. You’re likely just underconnected and no one ever taught you how to build the kind of relationships that truly support you.
That’s why I created a short quiz to help you notice where underconnecting might be showing up in your life and to show you that change is absolutely possible.
You can take it here:
Take the “Are You Underconnected?” Quiz
Connection isn’t something you earn. It’s something you build. And when you do, it changes everything.
I'd love to help you get there.
