Q: Why did you want to start this kind of business?
A: Owning a small business has been a dream of mine since I was a child. I've always found joy in creating, whether through crafting, writing or imagining something meaningful that didn't exist yet. The heart behind my business was shaped by my daughter and granddaughter, whose determination and courage continue to inspire me. It also grew from my own journey through anxiety and depression, and the healing I found through faith and community. My church, which embraces and uplifts those who are marginalized, reminded me of the power of compassion and connection. Another source of inspiration was the poem "Desiderata" by Max Ehrmann. It speaks of the desires of life and ways in which to live a life in peace with all things and all people. In a world that often feels chaotic and divided, I wanted to create something that might offer a sense of calm and peace. This business isn't just about selling, it is about serving. And if even one person feels a little more happy, a little more seen, a little more at peace, then I'll know I've done something worthwhile.
Q: How did you get your start?
A: During the pandemic, my daughter ran a small candle business from home. As her family grew, life became busier and she had to step away from it. She generously gave me her candle-making supplies and taught me how to make candles. I began exploring other handmade products, learning through DIY videos and getting inspiration from fellow small business owners. Family and friends became my product testers. With time and a lot of courage, I decided to turn my passion into a small business. I began with an online store, then started participating in local pop-up events. With the support of the community, I was fortunate to have some of my products placed in local shops. Today, you can find our products at Destiny Dairy Bar, Carlisle Country Market and Bella Elegante Permanent Jewelry - all located in the Carlisle area.
Q: What does your business sell or provide?
A: We offer a variety of thoughtfully made items designed to support well-being, for the mind, body or spirit. Some of our products include candles, wax melts, room sprays, soaps, body sprays, perfume/cologne, car diffusers, reed diffusers, apparel, books, faith and inspirational-based items, sensory toys for children/adults, as well as custom gift baskets for any season/occasion. Alongside my own handcrafted products, we're honored to feature products from other small, women-owned, Black-owned and veteran-owned businesses. Majority of the products we carry are free of parabens, sulfates and harsh chemicals, cruelty free and sustainable.
Q: What is the biggest challenge you are facing right now?
A: For me, the challenges are twofold - raising awareness about our small business and managing the rising costs of shipping and materials. I do my best to attend local pop-up events when I can, and I'm grateful to have a few products featured in nearby shops. Word of mouth has been a blessing and while many customers return after trying our products, it's that first introduction that truly helps us grow.
Q: What is your favorite thing to do or place in Cumberland County?
A: I love to take my grandchildren to various parks or anywhere they can play outside. They love going to Destiny Dairy Bar to see all of the animals and get ice cream.
